The Challenge
A Distributed Team with No Single Place to Connect, Share, or Stay Informed
As Akshara Technologies grew and the team spread across Ahmedabad, remote locations, and client sites, the absence of a shared digital home became increasingly visible. Company news went out by email and got buried. Recognition happened informally, if at all. New joiners had no way to find out what was happening at the company or who had milestones that week.
Workplace tools — applying for leave, viewing payslips, booking a desk, raising an IT ticket — were scattered across different systems with no central launchpad. Every task required navigating to a different URL. The result was low engagement with internal systems and a team that felt less connected than it should have been.
The business needed a modern intranet that would surface the right workplace tools, aggregate news across sites, celebrate the team, and make the company feel cohesive — without requiring every employee to be a SharePoint expert to navigate it.
Company news delivered only by email — no archive, no categories, no way to catch up if you missed it
Peer recognition happened in Slack messages that disappeared — no structured kudos or spotlight system

The Solution
A Modern Intranet Built on Viva Connections and SharePoint Online
Akshara Connect was built on SharePoint Online using Viva Connections as the framework, with custom SPFx web parts for sections the out-of-box components could not cover. The home page personalises itself based on the signed-in user — surfacing their pending approvals, leave balance, payslip availability, and IT support tickets in a six-tile workplace row.
News aggregates from across every SharePoint communication site in the tenant, categorised into Company News, People & Culture, Technology, Sustainability, Wellbeing, and Learning. A hero news card with full-bleed image occupies prime position, with a five-item sidebar for recent updates. All news is filterable and searchable.
Life at Akshara brings the human layer: a peer-to-peer kudos wall built on Viva Engage, an anonymous pulse check survey that closes every Friday, an employee spotlight profile rotated weekly by People & Culture, and a live company metrics panel showing engagement score, customer satisfaction (CSAT), and carbon reduction progress. A communities section surfaces Viva Engage groups relevant to the user's interests and location.
